About this deal

Noah promises to take special care of Mum and their beloved dog Winn, as Dad says that knowing they are okay will help him to stay safe too. It was here that he developed an obsession for kid’s literature, in particular, young adult fiction. The advice it gave pet owners left nothing to chance: "If at all possible, send or take your household animals into the country in advance of an emergency. He is the author of several award-winning novels including Being Billy which won the 2012 weRead Award and was shortlisted for the Branford Boase Award. The pace for the reader is intense, as it's evacuation day the following morning, perhaps it's now or never, Noah and Clem need to escape.

If you are a child with worries and need to talk to someone, or if you are worried about the welfare of a child, please contact Childline 0800 1111. This is the story about a boy, who against the odds, his determination to save, not only his dog but others pets as well from the despicable law set out by the government. A page-turner that fulfils all its promises and provides evidence of an author at the top of his game. This always makes me a little nervous reading a second book, in case I don't like it as much, but I need not have worried. I laughed, I cried, I thoroughly enjoyed this heart-warming story of a boy's unflinching courage to keep safe the things that are close to his heart. Noah agrees, but his best intentions are crushed when the government advises people to have their pets put to sleep as part of the war preparations. And he can't take Winn with him - refusing to accept this, along with the horrific ideas of what to do about Winn during this difficult time, he makes the decision to head to a place up north which can ensure the safety of his father's precious pet.

From the bestselling author of When the Sky Falls: The Times Children's Book of the Year, winner of the Books Are My Bag Readers Award for Children’s Fiction, w inner of the British Book Award for Children's Fiction Book of the Year and shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal. To these little people (and many adults as well), these creatures are so much more than animals – they are members of the family, loved fiercely and protected above all else.

At first glance, this new story feels like it should be a sequel just looking at the book's cover art, and in some ways when you read it you do get the feeling that Earle might have been so overly inspired when writing 'When the Sky Falls', he was exploding with imagination so much he spilled it into a just-as-brilliant 'While the Storm Rages'. I would definitely recommend this book, to adults and children alike and particularly to fans of Michael Morpurgo's animal/war books. What follows is a journey that portrays a number of realistic war themes: death, disappointment, the inability to control or deliver on promises, and separation from loved ones.

Whilst being in essence a historical novel, it does not fit easily into the list, for whilst it is historical, it is also an adventure of extraordinary proportions that will make you think, how far will you go for your pets? Instead, Noah and his friends and their pets – including a pretty terrifying Python – take off on a leaky old boat travelling up the Thames to find the animals a place of safety. It's the Second World War and while everyone else is evacuated to the countryside, 12-year-old Joseph ends up in the city with a woman who owns a zoo.

The legitimacy of the squabbling children, the bully’s behaviour, the animal’s courage and what faced Noah at the end was wonderful to read. Noah and his friend Clem try to save their dogs Winn and Frank but it soon turns into this adventure through London to help animals and pets who are going to be separated from their evacuated owners. I may not be from the war era, but the phrases/words used instantly take me back to my childhood, hearing similar expressions my parents would use. Not to forget the pets, of course, which add a sense of brevity to even serious situations (I mean, how could they not when you have a donkey! They are joined on their eventful journey by an eclectic mix of creatures, including a hat-wearing donkey, two mischievous kittens and an alarmingly large python.

More queues and sadly war is declared whilst they're in the queue and the staff there have to turn everyone away as they've already reached capacity. Also chosen by our Guest Editor, Rob Biddulph as one of his top recommendations: "The follow up to my favourite book of 2021, When The Sky Falls. His mum looks unwell, and Noah's immediate thought goes to his dad, but the government is stirring up the nation into preemptive action and Noah's going to be evacuated to Cornwall with his classmates.
