About this deal

I love the features of the triton line, it sits in my router table and is wonderful to use. I love the ease to which I can change bites rais an lower the the bit. For a novice such as myself this router can't be beat. I wish there was an option for buying the tool with out all the gadgets... personally I will never use the 31/4 router to do anything else than be in my table.

I'm now using this TRA001 router in combination with the RTA300 precision router table and the BJA300 biscuit joiner. I only wish I'd bought it earlier! I did have a problem with the plunging shaft. It broke on me. But, to be fair.. I use it a lot on, and off the table. Costumer service worked very hard to solve the issue. Offered to have it fixed by an authorized repair specialist. I am very mechanical so I repaired it myself after I received the free replacement part from triton. It's still under warranty, so they sent me the part with no problems. It saves me a lot of time, especially since I just have one router for off hand use and use with this table. Attaching and detaching the Triton router is simple and straightforward. Overall I like the router. I guess the only thing I'd chage is some of the parts feel like very cheap plastic. Like the plunging height stops and the plunging shaft. I have a feeling I will have the same problem in a few months because I use the router a lot.Further gains have also been made in the cut area. The TRA002 retains an impressive plunge depth of 68mm, allowing above-the-table bit and collet changes, but the TRA002’s 70mm maximum cutter diameter dwarfs the original TRA001’s 55mm capacity. After using the TRA001 to make six dining chairs out of white oak, I have some observations. I bought an aluminum router table insert and installed the router in the wing of one of my table saws, with a separate paddle switch. It's powerful and drives the big pattern routing bit through the white oak just fine. I really like the variable speed and the above-the-table height adjustment, an Still a really good concept, but not Festool quality, but then it is unfair to compair with a machine that cost 3 times as much. I also use a small Festool router so I can compair the quality feeling. Triton Tools, leading brand of woodworking hand and power tools, is revealing its new router: the TRA002. For over 20 years, Triton’s TRA001 has been a workshop staple around the world. Renowned as being the router designed for woodworkers, by woodworkers, it continues to rate among the best in product head-to-heads and is highly sought after. The Triton TRA001 lives up to its reputation in both hand held and router bench modes. The soft start and variable speed adjustment provides greater control while delivering the power to cleanly cut through hardwoods.

The power switch has a plastic window you have to slide out of the way to switch on power. This is really inconvenient with the router under the table. I suppose mounting another switch to the table saw could solve that problem. Or, perhaps breaking off the plastic safety window. Attaching a hose to the vacuum port interferes with the the lifer rod so you have to push the hose out of the way to attach the rod.I own most of the other routers on the market at this price point. For this review I will state what I like and dislike as compared to those other routers. My opinion is that if someone buys the biggest router on the market and the corresponding table it should be able to use any size of cutter.

No lights on the router like others (DeWalt) so make sure you have plenty of good lighting. Big and beefy means increase the safety! But the quality isn't what I expected, the bushing on the rod was not ok from start, it is a Little better now, but sometimes the Construction jamed and it was really impossible to move the height position without using one hand on the clutch and one hand to lift the router on the other side, It has gotten better, but I cant explain if it depends on Wood dust in the bushing or if it was some grades on the rod in the beginning. There is a fine adjustment that will literally move the bit up or down by just a hair; this is also invaluable for rabbits, slots, or even just getting that nice roundover without the horrible line that always needs sanding out. I have had my Triton for a good while now and it works flawlessly. I bought it specifically for use in a router table and I especially like the fact that no lift is required to lift the router above the table for bit changes and adjustments. A great feature and a serious cost savings.

Using the table in combination with an Triton router is a breeze. It's easy to adjust the table, attach dust extraction, and set the height of the router. I found no drift whatsoever when using it. The foot is stable, bigger than average routers. The plunge construction very ridgid which helps to keep narrow tolerances. Safety wise the on/off button is a nice as it is protected by a door. There is a small delay when powered up. Once you get used to it it is good to have. Speed is fully adjustable to router bit/ material you are cutting. The range and availability of extras such as collets and guide bushes has been good with availability from other makes such as Trend also out there – always a good sign for a product. The handle on the lifter will not clear a fence that is higher than about 4.5" so you can't lift the router in a continuous motion with a tall fence - you can do it with a bunch of half-turns. How about selling an extension rod or a longer one? Full disclosure: I did have to return my router but I have a lot of experience with tools and I think I just got one of the ones with some issues that weren't caught by QC.
