The Batman Who Laughs resurfaced in Gotham and partnered up with another Batman from the Dark Multiverse called the Grim Knight to work on a deadly serum from dead Bruce Waynes of the multiverse to cause maximum chaos. As part of the plan, they began by going after the Joker. Batplane (Formerly): His Batplane consisted of mandible-like wings and according to Batman of Earth 0 was quite fast. The character's name was influenced off of two silent films that inspired Bob Kane and Bill Finger to create both Batman and the Joker: The Bat Whispers (1930) and The Man Who Laughs (1928). There’s perhaps more of Joker’s essence in the illustrations than in Brubaker’s dialogue, which shows quite how well Mahnke grasps the character. Josiana has Gwynplaine secretly brought to her so that she may seduce him. She is interrupted by the delivery of a pronouncement from the Queen, informing Josiana that David has been disinherited, and the Duchess is now commanded to marry Gwynplaine. Josiana rejects Gwynplaine as a lover, but dutifully agrees to marry him.

This is a retelling of Batman's first encounter with the Joker for the post- Zero Hour continuity, presumably overwriting "Images" from Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #50. The Batman Who Laughs ( Bruce Wayne) is a supervillain appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. He is the evil counterpart and alternate version of Batman within the Dark Multiverse. In Injustice: Gods Among Us mobile, The Batman Who Laughs is a playable character (being considered a version of the Joker). Ultimately, the mini-series is a great example of why Brubaker felt so fresh in that first decade. Simply, at a time of great uncertainty, he could turn out work that made even the most dangerous of mysteries seem possible to know, and provide a relief in their ending.
