You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Inis knows exactly what it is trying to be, and in my opinion it proves that it is what it’s claiming to be, which you can’t say of very many games. If all players in the clash agree, the clash comes to an end and everyone gets to remain on the territory along with any units that were behind the safety of the citadel walls.

Every game I’ve played – a number approaching 20 at this point – has produced numerous surprising and exciting moments.Whilst it may initially appear to be a war game (especially when played with just two players), it soon becomes apparent with higher player counts that a long protracted war will often leave those players affected at a significant disadvantage to the other players. The fact that almost every card will be used every round coupled with the low number of cards means that you’ll be able to internalize them about halfway through your first game. I’m a big fan of polarizing games in general, even if I dislike a particular one, because chances are it’s someone’s favorite game. Or, as is sometimes the case, that you get in hand a combination of cards so situationally powerful that it brings the entire game to a vaguely unfair conclusion.

This probably makes it a tighter tactical puzzle that’s less punitive to those who end up on the wrong end of a draft or combat. And the good news there is – it’s actually great at the two player count, but you obviously lose out on a lot of what likely makes Inis exceptional.

Conversely, I had deliberately amassed the largest army in a less-contested tile, not knowing how exactly I’d deploy them to win as I was building it, but knowing they’d give me options in the endgame. Inis sounds great, I’ve heard a lot of good things about it and your review really makes me want to try it!

Season cards allow you to do basic actions (in different ways) while triskell cards give you the opportunity to react to what your opponent does OR make powerful combos. We were able to negotiate some joint attacks on a stronger player using it, to the mutual benefit of at least a couple players. These gigantic, vividly illustrated tiles are in the shape of a Triskel (a Celtic symbol featured prominently in the game), with craggy edges that fit together like the most metal jigsaw puzzle ever.

Additionally, some of them are islands, which can only be accessed from harbor tiles and have some other rules surrounding them that make them harder to access and/or invade. Each time you accomplish 1 or more of them, you can take a pretender token, which allows you to win at the start of the next round, provided you don’t tie with another player for most total victory conditions. When a clash begins, defenders have a chance to move units behind the walls of any citadels in the territory, where they will be safe from battle.
