About this deal

Hot water was ‘on demand’ but our demands were often ignored, particularly at the bathroom wash basin and the shower controls were aging and rather ‘cranky’ . It is a story of an incredible woman who pursues her two biggest passions, playing violin and observing birds. The signs around her house are now explicitly to keep people away, not just to avoid disturbing the birds but even the spiders.

As a reader unfamiliar with Len Howard’s life and work, it’s impossible to know where fact and fiction ends but it’s this blurring of lines that makes Bird Cottage such an absorbing read. This moving novel imagines the story of this remarkable woman's decision to defy society's expectations, and the joy she drew from her extraordinary relationship with the natural world. Nevertheless, it’s a gentle and absorbing read and I’m sure many bird enthusiasts will now be keen to find Len’s books. The windows and doors are kept open to allow Great Tits and Robins easy access; she recognises and names individuals, and follows their lives over several years: their battles for food and mates, their constant struggle to maintain territory and, almost unbelievably, her attempts to teach them to count.Bird Cottage is a beautiful celebration of one woman, Len Howard, and her unwavering devotion and passion for wild birds. for the local birdlife to visit and forms such an amazing bond with them, much to the amusement and often scornful looks of others who didn't understand her more simple way of life. The stunning coastline offers 750 miles of flawless beaches and hidden coves, and Cardiff offers a vibrant atmosphere and plenty of cultural discoveries.

It features her family life, which was very sociable and musical, and soon finds herself setting off on her own adventures, working in London as a violinist. Howard was a remarkable character, a formidable defender of her beloved birds, whose writing found a hugely appreciative audience. She grew up in Wales, became a violist in a London orchestra, and then made a radical choice to leave it all and study birds.

I felt duty bound to read Guy Shrubsole’s “ Who Owns England” first, so this review is a little bit later than I had thought it would be. However, her writings did raise the general public’s awareness to the importance of birds and the habitats they needed to thrive. Star always devoted a great deal of time to raising her young, feeding them longer than most tits and teaching them various handy tricks. At one point in the narrative, Howard works earnestly to fight a construction company that wants to build a trailer park on land that abuts hers, and she wins.

Len's life (1894-1973) was an extraordinary one made even more exceptional by giving up her career as a gifted violinist to open her home to wild birds so as to study them. She came from a wealthy family and initially chose to play as a violinist in an orchestra in London. Move through to the lounge, which has a wood burner set into a cosy inglenook creating a warm and welcoming place to unwind after a fresh stroll on Weybourne Beach. Howard learned, going against established science, that individual intelligence of birds determined action more than instinct.

Bird Cottage is her first novel to be translated into English, has been nominated for the BNG and Libris prizes in the Netherlands and is being translated into several languages. With these, she managed to captivate a large audience 'with her observations on the tits, robins, sparrows and other birds who lived nearby, flew freely in and out of her windows, and would even perch on her shoulder as she typed. Similar to Charles Darwin, Howard did not spring up at birth as a naturalist but grew into that role over decades. The first person perspective which has been used throughout works so well, as does the present tense which is continually used.In between chapters narrating her life – the course of which, I got the sense, was influenced in no small way by her rather temperamental parents – we are treated to excerpts (again fictionalised) from Len’s notes on the birds with whom she shares the latter part of her life. She knew what she was doing and why, even though this went against what was seen as acceptable for women in her time.
