About this deal

I don't know why I am answering a thread on Finishing, my Finishing usually leaves a lot to be desired! These are a 30mm abrasive veclro backed sanding block, ideal for removing small imperfections from paintwork when you need to do a small localised repair, such as a localised deep scratch or flattening back paint after a stone chip repair.

The purpose of doing this between coats is to smooth down any raised grain or imperfections that have occurred from the first application. There may be some benefit to adhesion, when you denib, but it will be limited and the second coat should be fine. It looks expensive and is dearer than when I bought mine on special at Screwfix, but it gives you a slightly cushioned velcro pad sized to the sheets (choice of two sizes) and a connection for a vacuum cleaner hose. Can a Floor Sander Drum be used with a fine grain or would this be too heavy handed and strip the finish? If you’ve chosen to use steel wool though, then you’ll want to use that dry, otherwise your steel wool will turn rusty!Mirka Mirlon pads are recomended when decorating for the removal of raised grain on timber after an initial coating has been applied, and recommended for denibbing between subsequent coats.

The three dimensional structure of the pads is easy to use on contoured surfaces and profiles, as well as areas which are difficult to reach. It might seem counter-intuitive to be sanding a finish that you’ve just applied, so I prefer to think about it as polishing the finish that you’ve applied rather than sanding it. Denibbing is the removal of “nibs” and imperfections from your finish, and it should be performed between each coat of any finish applied. Personally I like to use 400 grit, but to be honest there’s really not much in it so in my opinion it's not worth worrying about, but I wouldn't go lower than 240 grit or higher than 600.Mirka Mirlon denibbing pads are especially designed for sanding surfaces prior to the application of finishing coats, primers or lacquers. Because you are roughing up the surface as well it’ll improve the adhesion of any further coats too.

The Finishing Pad should also be used when you have applied your last coat of finish to finish the job off feeling extra smooth. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Our Finishing Pads (De-nibbing Pads) are used to give wooden finishes a perfectly smooth feel after the application of an oil or varnish. Our premium cleaning and restoration products meet the highest professional demands yet are packaged and designed to remain easy-to-use for everyone. I saw that denibbing is recommended with fiddes hardwax oil, how do you do this for a large area such as a floor? To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. You don't need to apply much pressure at all while you're sanding - just go over it very gently, and do it in the direction of the wood grain, unless it's MDF or something that doesn't have a wood grain ofcourse. You don't need to go over the same area any more than once or twice, it should feel smooth after one or two light passes.

Denibbing is a process to remove nibs -when a varnish is applied to wood the grain is raised so it feels rough when the varnish has dried -hence the need for fine abrasive (abrasive isnt made wit sand these days! Wood is a naturally porous material, and when you put oils on wood, they soak in, giving excellent liquid repellency and protection while still maintaining a natural look and feel. Also I presume I would need to get a sanding block for the Abranet pads too as I currently just have a sander and nothing to do hand sanding with apart from my hands. Now you can apply your next coat of finish in the same way as you did before, wait for it to full dry again.

I use 0000 (four-noughts) wire wool (that's a grade finer than John, above) for applying the wax, but you can use a pan scourer (the green or white matty things, not Brillo pads, they are too coarse). There is a chance that it will help but its difficult to say for sure with out seeing the doors and the variance that you have experienced. Mirka Mirlon Denibbing pads are a cost effective, and economical alternative to steel wool (they are sometimes referred to as synthetic steel wool), abrasive cloth and abrasive papers. Its really just a light going over the surface to remove any lose nibs or particles that managed to get in or under the first coat of oil.
