About this deal

I was so glad for the positive ending Ellie was able to experience even though it was very expectable. One of the main reasons as to why I didn't really enjoy this because I just felt that this is for really a young audience and because of this, even the writing and plot felt childish and very exaggerated and made me not really want to carry on.

I found the whole idea of using QR codes throughout the book to connect to Ellie's playlist absolutely genius! Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. Yesterday a parent came over to tell me how impressed she was by the book fair and that you did a fabulous job of selling the books to the children first.

Most days, Ellie Pillai is somewhere between invisible, and not very cool - and usually she's okay with that. It’s how she describes herself when introductions are required during Mrs Aachara’s first drama lesson with her Year 11 class. I particularly loved Tamil representation as well as the story of Ellie Pillai, and I look forward to future works from Pillainayagam. The only part I wish had been more fleshed out was the romance - it felt a bit out of nowhere when we learn that [you know who] had feelings for ellie all along for me. I don't think I'd recommend this book to people my age , but I'll definitely pass my copy onto my younger cousins as this is the type of book I would have really appreciated and loved if I was a lot younger.

This funny, heartfelt, true-to-life, coming-of-age page-turner fizzes with emotional energy and the power of music. Insgesamt also ein nettes Buch, das man einfach mal lesen kann, aber es muss auch nicht unbedingt sein. Then again, could this be the year that Ellie declares, Ellie Pillai is Brown, in her introduction to the substitute drama teacher, Mrs Aachara. I truly enjoyed reading this book, it was a pleasant read that brought a smile to my face when I needed it most. So the thought that Ellie is taking drama for GCSE rather than computer science, is likely to be devastating.

With classics such as Ted Hughes's The Iron Man and award-winners including Emma Carroll's Letters from the Lighthouse, Faber Children's Books brings you the best in picture books, young reads and classics. Few unexpected incidents that tested their friendship, a new drama teacher who suddenly seems to notice her existence, also a romance encountered when Ash the new boy transferred to her school. Appreciate the family related conflicts as I think the author did well in tackling two situations of psychological struggles from both Ellie and Jess POVs-- both emotionally-driven and uplifting to me. We understand that she is desperate to be her authentic self, but how can she do this without upsetting her family and friends? A beautiful tale about how those around you, especially during your fragile adolescent years, can enrich your life, shape your ambitions and ultimately, provide the love you haven’t managed to give yourself yet.

You guys are such a force for good and I am a passionate supporter of Indie booksellers, so I'm so happy this worked out well (I'd love to know how many books were sold if you have it to hand - it felt like quite a lot! The only reason I went for 4 rather than 5 stars was I felt it was way too long and dragged in places. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. They think she’s taking computer science when all along she’s been taking Mr Grange’s drama lessons…. The author, Christine Pillainayagam, has written a cracking debut YA book threaded through with popular musical references which I particularly enjoyed. This was so incredibly young-adult (YA) and thus, the perfect palate cleanser after all the heavy dystopian books. I loved that the reader was able to experience Ellie’s character development in such a personal way as we get access to her thoughts.
