About this deal

All comments above accepted, useful to encourage my son to accompany me on future Bothying trips, backs up Dad’s plan with some photos and mistakes add to the shared knowledge etc. For a prize of a free night’s accommodation here, spot three differences in the outside appearance, by May 2013 [ N. As you can tell from the front cover the photography inside is stunning and really captures the places well. Well I guess anyone writing a guide book should make a donation to some aspect of the subject matter.

Some of the bothies featured can be reached in a half day's walk, on easy to follow bridleways and paths; others require technical and/or navigation skills, especially in winter, with some river crossings or scrambling. It’s somewhat unfortunate that Allan’s new book was published in February 2020, right before the Covid-19 pandemic which prompted the Mountain Bothies Association to close all of their bothies. They took on the building and, thanks to funds raised the place was completely renovated in the perfect retreat you see today. The immediate area around the bothy was very boggy, so I walked on for a bit towards the foot of Suilven and ended up in one of the most picture perfect spots for a camp I’ve ever experienced! The Scottish bothy bible is the first ever complete guide book to Scotland’s bothies, featuring full details on over 100 MBA bothies and more.Tapping into the rising reputation and visibility of working class writing in the UK of late, Thomas has, with a limited cast of characters, constructed a dark, and unsettling book, packed to the gills with atmosphere and an overhanging miasma of violence. Each bothy also has a ‘diary entry’ section too, where the author records her own memories of finding and or staying in the bothy, which adds a personal touch. With full maps and detailed information on the locations and approach routes – by canoe, foot and bicycle – plus a forward by legendary quadruple amputee mountaineer Jamie Andrew. Well written, stunning pictures, and lots of good information and tips on not only the bothies themselves but also what to bring/pack for your journey which I found extremely useful.

Who needs feather beds and five-star luxury when a real wilderness experience is there for the taking? Says Geoff: “Whatever the weather, this is an unforgettable expedition and well worth the long drive north. Great little coffee table book, but also if you're a serious hiker this is truly AMAZING because it gives exact descriptions and coordinates of how to reach these neat little houses. Aye, you’ll notice a huge difference between the ‘Glendar’ Shiel she describes in the book and the one that’s there now. Featuring 26 selected bothies, the author shares her memories of using these free 'stone tents' in some of the country's wildest and most remote locations. In my world the most valuable interactions between people are those that don’t involve charging money.

The perfect resource for any bothy fan, and ideal for anyone happily transported to hidden corners of the country from the comfort of their armchair.Geoff Allan’s Scottish Bothy Walks books is a superb companion to his earlier book The Scottish Bothy Bible. The excerpts from the author's own bothy book entries provide a nice insight to the author's mind as she travels from bothy to bothy. The best bothies for Munros, beaches, seclusion, families and beginners, wildlife, romantic hideaways, wild and remote and stunning scenery.

Even for those who have no inclination to take to the hills, The Book of the Bothy makes a compelling read. Many of these tales reveal the difficulties of life in past years in some of Britain's remotest outposts. Perhaps the best that can be hoped for is that it may take the heat off the other three quarters of the MBA network which aren’t included here. I'm sure it will be of use to the adventurous as, even though I'm not a hiker/mountaineer, it seems to have vital information I would have thought necessary for each Bothy: size (rooms, sleeping numbers), map lat/long location (plus indicative maps), fuel/water supply (do you need to take any etc) key local attractions, public transport, special notes about access/restrictions, different routes to each (parking, distance from and time of walk, terrain). Her love of dramatic landscapes has since led to walking and backpacking adventures all over the world.
