About this deal

Neither the sharp blades of a carpet knife nor scratching, chiseling or sanding off worked satisfactory. years of being out on salty waters, exposed to constant strain and forces by the shrouds, waves and ups and downs of temperatures do leave their marks on every material. The OP said it was a triangle so I assume it goes down the hull behind the settee which is bonded to the hull and part of the cabinetry. Over the years these constant different forces will create tiny rifts through which water will and can leak into the boat itself. The very two chain plates which have caused the core in the beams to partially disintegrate have done much more damage to the roof.

The chain plate is bolted to a large triangle piece of wood, and the wood in turn is connected to the body of the the boat on each side, and ends at the wooden floor. The cupboard is forward of the rotten bit where the chainplate attaches, followed by the main bulkhead forward of that? The pre-owners of my ship did notice a problem with the chain plates: On three of the chain plates I found thick layers of silicone sealing mass, something the Fiskars yard back in 1975 surely didn´t had at hand. To speed up this process I am going to fill the holes with those little packages of silicate which will hopefully suck out all the moisture from the wood. After putting some 3 hours of work into this first step of working on the chain plates of my sailing yacht I concluded work and sat down to think of the next steps to go in this part of the refit program. I am currently checking different methods which is the best way: Resin without GRP-mesh, resin with GRP-mesh, classic filler.

The boat has leaked water through some ports, and the through the chain plate area, which holds the standing rigging of the mast. Even though, I consider myself a novice in sailing, but I know for sure that there are many of you out there that have so much experience in sailboat structure, and I will wait patiently for your feedback. As I was taking off the chain plates from the outside I could already spot the dark brown color of rotten wood. The chain keeper will bridge the gap from the open door to where the magnet is mounted and can be cut down to size.
