About this deal

Gilmore, Kelly (March 24, 2022). "Netflix Is Turning The Seven Husbands Of Evelyn Hugo Into a Movie". E! News. I know I’ve talked about a lot of specific things in the book, but I don’t know exactly how to put into words what this book meant to me. You can almost feel how much Taylor Jenkins Reid felt this book. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo left me an emotional mess, but also a happy mess. All I know is I feel ruined for any other book, and I want you to be as well. The room is quiet as Evelyn lets herself hear her own words. And then she smiles, a bright, wide, deeply sincere smile. She starts laughing to herself and then refocuses on me. “I feel like I spent my entire life loving her.” Monique is furious and leaves but realizes that Evelyn has told her all this because she intends to end her life. She considers calling authorities but decides that it should be Evelyn's choice if she wants to die. She realizes that she will forgive Evelyn some day. Eventually, Evelyn is found dead, and her death is reported as an accidental overdose.

Evelyn Hugo follows Monique Grant leaving New York and making her way to LA to join the industry, her 7 husbands along the way, and tales of gossip, rumors, relationships, debauchery, and forbidden love. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo Review Evelyn Hugo is one of the greatest literary characters I have ever had the pleasure to read from. The exploration of her Cuban heritage and bisexuality is fascinating, especially given the era and her celebrity status. She is one of those intoxicating characters you will never be able to purge from your mind with her strong will, her independence, her strength, her cunning, and her compassion. Evelyn Hugo is unforgettable in my mind and hearing her story was one of the greatest pleasures I think I have ever experienced as a reader. Work written by people who have lived the story is always going to have a beauty and honesty that cannot be matched by someone writing outside of their own life. Thanks to online descriptions and tags, it's no secret that this is a queer romance, as Evelyn is finally ready to come out as bisexual in her biography. Evelyn's story is complicated — she's fully aware of the dangers queer people face in the '50s, '60s, and beyond, even with the hope of change brought about by the Stonewall riots and Elton John's confession. Being bisexual didn’t make me disloyal,” Evelyn says. “One has nothing to do with the other. Nor did it mean that Celia could only fulfil half my needs.”The book is written in alternative viewpoints, a little bit from Monique's perspective as she interviews Evelyn and a lot from Evelyn's perspective as she shares the story of her life. When a book has two different viewpoints, there's always a fear that one is more interesting than the other. But not here. I can honestly say that every moment of this book was equally riveting. In The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, present-day Evelyn is a 79-year-old recluse, a far cry from the woman she was as she ruthlessly gained stardom through her films and various personal scandals from the 1950s on. However, she's ready to tell her story to the world — the story of her true self, the glamorous and not-so-glamorous parts of her career, and her marriages — to Monique Grant, a seemingly random and unknown journalist who can't believe she's being offered this opportunity. As they sit together and Monique learns everything she needs to know about the real Evelyn to write the actress's biography, it becomes clear why she was chosen for the job and that it wasn't random at all. An actress and Evelyn’s co-star in Little Women. Jealous and striving, Ruby is threatened by Celia and outs her to Evelyn. Ruby marries Don and later reveals he abused her, just as he did Evelyn. The writing is crisp and easy, and I can honestly say that this is a great beach read, because I read a good portion of it while sitting on a Florida beach." I chose to center my story on women who are underrepresented. I'm able to do that and still be considered mainstream because of my previous work. Which means I'm able to put a queer story in the mainstream and put it in front of people who might not otherwise read one. I am in a unique position to be able to do that and so I chose to do it.

This book is also fiercely and unapologetically socio-political and I love that. Evelyn’s story is one of being a woman in a man’s world. It is one of being a Cuban woman in a white woman’s world. It is one of being a bisexual woman in an era where attraction to women was demonized by the whole culture. It is one of hiding yourself for ambition, one of trying to decide which one takes precedent, one of aging, and one of never knowing whether your choices were right. Evelyn falls in love with, and marries, actor Don Adler, whom she believes to be the first true love of her life. But, in the following months, Don begins to abuse Evelyn when she becomes successful and is outshining his own career. Without a doubt, this is my favourite book of all time now. I have never had such a big emotional reaction to a work of literature, and I highly doubt another book will be able to come close for a long time. I finished this book wishing for more literature on Evelyn Hugo and wanting to watch her films, which unfortunately do not exist. A reread is definitely on the horizon for me, and I have not been able to stop thinking about it since closing this gem.

Could The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo really be fiction, dreamt up entirely in Taylor Jenkins Reid's mind? Every moment felt so real, so tangible. When I reached the end, it was hard to let go, hard to return to a world where this was nothing more than a figment of the imagination. i just wanted them to be a big happy family. when celia and evelyn would stop talking to each other through the years, it made me so emotional.. especially when celia was talking to evelyn through her oscar speech 😭 crying sobbing throwing up banging my head against the table, why can’t they just be happy, let them be happy, please please PLEASE, i need this more than oxygen. Evelyn Hugo is finally ready to tell the truth about her glamorous and scandalous life. But when she chooses unknown magazine reporter Monique Grant for the job, no one in the journalism community is more astounded than Monique herself. Why her? Why now?
