AYes. It’s very hard for anyone of us to imagine what it must really be like to have nothing and nobody in the world. I was showing Street Child to some children in a school in Brussels and a little boy called Juan told me that he used to live on the streets in Peru, and was adopted at the age of nine. Very sadly, many children today live on the streets.

street child is a very sad book but nice ending my very favourie charater is tip because he is very out going and talkitiveJim showed Thomas the appalling life that street children led. Night after night Barnardo was shown the hiding places where very young children slept. Ten year old, Jim Jarvis taught Barnardo where to look to find the children. They slept in barrels, on rooftops, under market stalls and anywhere in fact were they could sleep safely, sheltered from the wind and rain. Thomas Barnardo had some soul searching to do. He wanted to be trained as a doctor and go out to China to be a missionary. Jim had shown him a very real social problem in London’s East End. Should he stay in London and help rescue other destitute boys and girls? He was the only one who could make that decision. This activity focuses on chapter four, ‘The Workhouse’. This activity can linked to the activity Street Child, the play, which looks at the play adaptation of the story and compares it to the novel. Before reading

AHard to say. Church charities were more alert to the problems of girls on the streets than they were of boys, so they might well have been taken in to an existing Home and possibly put into service when they were older. Later, Barnardo found a way of including girls in his Homes. Otherwise, I think it may have been the workhouse for them. In Far From Home I try to imagine what might have happened to Emily and Lizzie.After the meal the man with the hanging head gave Jim a blanket and showed him a room full of shelves and long boxes where all the boys slept.’ P42.

I really liked the book. I like reading about orphans, and I really liked this story about Jim! What makes this book about an orphan a little more special is that Jim is not in an orphan house. It depends on the day where he sleeps and eats. There are also books where the main character is in an orphan house. The book is mostly situated there. A At the time of meeting Barnardo, he is about 10. He was probably born in 1858. There is no record of when he died.

Get to know us

I read this story with a year five class over the course of three weeks. The children were captivated by Jim’s plight and were eager to continue reading to the end. Most of the children were able to sympathise with Jim after considering their own lives and comparing that to the life of Jim. There were sensitive issues in the story, such as Jim losing his mother and being evicted from his home, and these had to be dealt with delicately. At the end of Chapter Eleven, Rosie lies to Jim and tells him that his sisters Emily and Lizzie went to live in the countryside in a summer house with a grey-eyed lady. Street Child ends with Emily and Lizzie wanting to tell their story from the moment their ma leaves them in the care of Rosie at the big house. Their adventures have only just begun.
