Sarah, also known as @theplantrescuer, is a self-taught houseplant obsessive who firmly believes every plant deserves a happy life. Her determination to see beyond the ‘perfect plant’ and to rescue unloved plants makes her the go-to guide. As children we view nature with awe and wonder, but as we grow up our culture provides us with evidence that plants and animals exist purely to support the human race. We have been conditioned to see nature as a commodity to be exploited: a tree has more value chopped down than it has living; an elephant tusk is more valuable than the elephant itself. In our self-imposed role as overseers of nature, we can probably agree that we’ve failed on a monumental scale and that perhaps it’s time to realign ourselves with nature rather than lording over it. At a very basic level we need plants to exist and this fact alone should warrant our appreciation and respect. In the second half of this workshop, you will learn about the importance of paying attention to a leaf’s colour and texture. This will enable you to diagnose common houseplant ailments and how to remedy them, how to recognise different pests and treat them, and why you might want to consider propagating to ‘save’ a dying plant.
