About this deal

Here, in response to a girl's query to her teddy bear about the process of growing up, she whips up ""Mr. Babette Cole caused something of a stir when she published Mummy Laid an Egg: it was described by The Bookseller as: "Funny, factual and frank. Who else but Babette would have the temerity to tackle this subject in a picture book and the genius to carry it off! The text takes the form of a conversation between a small girl and her teddy bear, and is ingenious and funny.

In Hair in Funny Places her artwork is without exaggeration some of the best she has ever done: it is brilliant. Gleeful as ever in her cataloguing of gas-passing, nose-picking and other improprieties, Cole (The Bad Good Manners Book) introduces an almost incorrigible child. Hilarious illustrations of Mr and Mrs Hormone wreaking their revenge on the body, mixing their "Essence of Pube" and making mischief in the unsuspecting bodies of boys and girls as they fight their way towards adulthood will certainly raise a smile. This book is one that is easily shared with a boy or girl who is starting to show signs of puberty--no matter what your level of comfort with "the talk". Hair in Funny Places is an excellent basic introduction for young, pre-pubescent boys and girls alike, which does much to normalise the experience and pave the way for future discussions. Once again Cole ( Cupid ; The Silly Book ) pulls readers into a wonderfully wacky universe where ordinary rules needn't apply.

She touches briefly on everything from menstruation (""She found a tiny drop of blood in her underpants"") to acne and body odor (""He wanted to kiss the girls but Mr.

Puberty can be daunting for children and the imagery of evil little monsters cooking up batches of chemicals entitled "Essence of Pube", ready to be pumped around the body, will hardly put children at ease. Cole's madcap style leaves no room for embarrassment; it could pave the way for more informative discussions between kids and adults. She worked on such children's programmes as Bagpuss (working with Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin) and Jackanory for BBC television. My positive would be that the author address's that everyone develops differently and at different times. Praise for Boying Up: "A matter-of-fact mirror that reflects reality and respect, not bewildered embarrassment.Larsen playfully changes up the bedtime routine in her debut picture book, with parents and child swapping roles. Typical of Cole's no-holds-barred approach to bodily issues, over the course of the book she touches briefly on everything from menstruation to acne, body odour, and even erections. Just made me laugh really, but quite informative I suppose; in the most straight talking way I've ever seen in a children's book.

With her irresistible illustrations and wonderfully funny text, who better to guide us through all things hairy than the brilliant Babette Cole.My 10-year-old step-daughter was equal parts horrified and amused for the same reasons, especially as we've reached the point where we can maturely and comfortable discuss puberty in our house without any hangups (on EITHER side) or sugar-coating. She graduated from Canterbury College of Art in 1973 and was the illustrator and author of more than 150 witty, imaginative, irreverent and thought-provoking picture books for children including the bestselling, stereotype-defying Princess Smartypants. Open Library is an initiative of the Internet Archive, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. For young girls, with the exception of getting taller, the whole book focuses on the negatives of puberty.
