About this deal

The speaker's reproduction tends to be characterized by medium sound sequences, which are not reproduced very linearly. As well as keen pricing, solid build quality and clean software, you can generally rely on a Moto G phone to deliver strong stamina. Motorola’s splurge of Moto G devices in recent years has muddied the once crystal-clear budget phone waters. The latest in a long line of dirt-cheap Motorola handsets, the Moto G22 looks to be exceptional value for money. If you are looking for an inexpensive mid-range phone, we recommend our review of the Poco M4 Pro 5G.

An average Geekbench 5 result of 171 single-core and 943 multi-core falls way short of rivals costing just a fraction more. Take a look at the side-by-side image below: the main camera looks overcast, while the ultrawide looks like it was taken on a completely different day – both images were taken seconds apart. The ultra-wide-angle lens with a wide field of view of 118° is certainly usable for social media content, but the image quality is not sufficient for more. The performance drops very sharply during multitasking tasks, so the Moto G22 often cannot be used for minutes. With minimal joining lines separating the sides from the rear panel, it feels as though the phone has been constructed using a single block of plastic and it barely flexes a milimeter when twisted. You get a mere 15W charger in the box, which took just over an hour to get the phone from 0 to 50% in my experience. Motorola's smartphone only has one speaker on the bottom, but it is sufficiently loud and powerful with a maximum of 87 dB(A).

I left it cranked up to full or almost full the whole time, even in shady indoor conditions, and still could have done with more. The ultrawide camera is surprisingly good, although there was a bit of a discrepancy when it comes to light capture. However, terrible performance and a dim display should push you to consider paying just a little more.

The front of the Moto G22 is made of scratch-resistant display glass that blends flat into the plastic frame. There’s also a 16-megapixel selfie camera around front – which, again, is capable of adequate results in good lighting. The side-mounted power button doubles as a fingerprint reader, which is always handy, and the Moto G22 supports face unlocks. Although the working memory is actually solid, complex applications, especially games, are very quickly deleted from the buffer. The case is made of high quality TPU material that is flexible, thin and lightweight silicone for an exact fit of the phone. There’s a possibility that this issue might be addressed in a future firmware update, but as it stands the Moto G22’s screen is a bit of a failure. The color temperature of the display is also calibrated too cool - a slightly bluish color cast is visible in practice. Fans of the myUX interface should check out the Moto G31 which has much better performance than its sister model and a high-quality Full HD AMOLED screen.

As I’ve already alluded to, the Moto G22 struggles to maintain that alleged 90Hz display refresh rate once activated, with frequent halts and stutters when simply navigating between homescreens and apps, and even among menus. However, the Moto G22 also has positive features, such as the good build quality, the very long battery runtimes, and the low waste heat. In view of the massive deficits in the system performance, a recommendation for the Moto G22 difficult.s Wild Life test wouldn’t even run on the phone, while it scored a lowly 460 in the SlingShot Extreme test.
