About this deal

It’s a heartbreaking depiction of a parent’s deceit, collusion and hopelessness when dealing with a child who is an addict.

Councillors - Moray Council Councillors - Moray Council

The silverfish are a side-effect of Norman’s addiction to amphetamines, which have destroyed his career and are now destroying his mind. When, in February 2003, the anti-war demonstration jammed the London streets near his home, he was inspired again. The story tells of a fragmented Jewish family trying to retain their sense of kinship in a secular world. The PCC is a body corporate, which means that it is a separate body from the people who serve on it.In spite of the grim situation at the heart of the story, this book is full of humor and memorable characters.

When we meet him in the first few pages of this novel we learn that his career as a barrister is in ruins and he is experiencing drug-induced hallucinations. Her second novel, Madame Sousatzka (1962), was filmed by John Schlesinger filmed with Shirley MacLaine in the leading role in 1988. I read The Elected Member – the winner of the Booker Prize in 1970 – as part of my Booker Prize Project in which I set out to read all the winners since the prize was initiated in 1969. Fortunately, while the reference may date The Elected Member, it doesn't prevent it from resonating today.

The Elected Member was the second winner of the 1970 Booker Prize, after Something to Answer For by P. After 9/11, McEwan began visibly to engage with contemporary politics in a way he had not done since The Ploughman's Lunch.

Staff in the group offices ensure that councillors are able to respond to their constituents on a range of local issues, and have their diaries kept up to date for the numerous meetings they have to attend – not just on the council but in respect of many outside organisations. The first sign of this was in Enduring Love, the story of a science journalist obsessively stalked by a religious loner. Apart from the mother, Sarah, who is already dead in the current time frame of the novel, there are no unpleasant or odious characters. Although we have sympathy for Norman as he experiences the horrors his mind produces, we have even more sympathy for his family who have to deal with the effects (although not for the dead mother, who does not seem to have been a positive influence). The choices they made are not always honourable or in the best interests of the family but themselves and continuing to live together as a unit but operating singularly is untenable .As he recuperates in the institution, the three members of the family, and Norman's estranged sister Esther, reflect on how they reached this critical point. Some of the councillors are present most days at the group offices, others less so, perhaps having to split their political duties with full-time careers and domestic arrangements. In The Innocent, the scene shifts from England to Europe, but it is a Europe shadowed by its Nazi past. Most of these could arguably be attributed to Norman’s deceased mother, the smothering but cruel Sarah, who seems to ultimately be the cause of every family member’s present misery; her unwillingness to let her children live their own lives leads Norman to drug-taking and Bella to closet herself in a world of childish make-believe, so that she feels that she has never grown up; she still wears her girlish white lace socks, even though she is now in her forties. The descriptions of Zweck's attempts to rid himself and his surroundings of the silverfish that he's convinced are everywhere are vivid and painful, a testament to Rubens' ability to get inside the head of her protagonist and show his suffering as well as his unhinged state.
