About this deal

Then something happened that was almost beyond belief. It was at the end of an exhausting late-summer day when we reached a small beach, a beautiful sheltered cove where the sea had the flat-calmness of treacle and dolphins swam in the bay. We pitched the tent on the shingle and slept – until 3am, when we woke to find the sea about to wash over the tent. Raynor felt a strength and sureness in his grip that she hadn’t since they forded the glacial meltwaters of an Icelandic river a few years earlier.Unflinchingly honest and powerfully honest, “The Salt Path” is ultimately a depiction of home: how it can be lost, rediscovered, and rebuilt in the most unexpected of ways. Raynor delivers an astonishing narrative about two people dragging themselves out of the depths of despair along some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country, trying to find a solution to their problems and finding themselves, ultimately. This is a story about hardship and struggling against insurmountable odds, refusing to give in. But it is also about hope and there are also many moments of humour that pop up, little lamps of laughter brightening a bleak path.

Book review: Landlines, by Raynor Winn - The Washington Post

Five years ago, the idyll Winn has built for herself in Fowey, south Cornwall, would have seemed unthinkable. After a long-running financial dispute with a childhood friend of Moth’s, the couple ended up in court, resulting in an ‘utterly devastating’ eviction notice, and a week to leave their home. Within days, Moth was diagnosed with an incurable neurodegenerative disease called corticobasal degeneration (CBD). In that moment, ‘Everything we believed our future would hold was gone.’ Jeremy Renner flashes smile at Los Angeles Lakers game just 10 months after nearly being crushed to death by heavy snow plow It was the worst thing that could possibly happen to us – or so we thought. Later in that fateful week, Moth had what we believed would be a routine hospital appointment. It turned out to be anything but. He was diagnosed with a rare neurodegenerative disease – Corticobasal Degeneration, or CBD, a terminal condition without treatment or cure. We were advised that the illness would slow his movements, co-ordination and thinking until they eventually stopped, and the best he could do was not get too tired and be careful on the stairs.

But for us, now both in our early 60s, life is still the same. I still make endless cups of tea for Moth, he still likes to dip his Mars bar in, the same way he did the first time I saw him. Our lives are still lived to the rhythm of weather and seasons, so it’s been strangely hard to take in how much our story of homelessness and headlands has resonated with so many people.

Remarkably it has helped in the past, alleviating his condition, mitigating symptoms. However, Moth’s condition is worse than it has ever been. He is slowly losing his battle, his muscles growing weaker with each day. Eventually he will lose his speech, memory, and not be able to breath.

Then came the mighty Falls of Glomach and a watershed moment where, just as it seemed all might be lost, a bright new hope was forged. “I was struggling to get over a boulder when suddenly this hand came down and pulled me up,” she says.
